What began as a regular school day at Queen Elizabeth Public School in Kitchener quickly changed course when a water issue disrupted operations and forced an unexpected shutdown.
Students who arrived expecting a normal Wednesday routine were instead met with an early dismissal notice.
The Waterloo Region District School Board confirmed that the school was closed after the water supply was turned off.
With no functioning water service, the building was deemed unsuitable for students and staff, leading to an immediate decision to send children home.
According to the school board, facility teams, along with staff from Kitchener Utilities, were on-site working to identify and address the problem throughout the day.
During this time, access to the school remained restricted for both students and staff while repairs and checks were carried out.
The disruption didn’t stop at classroom hours. Before-school and after-school programs were also cancelled, leaving parents to quickly adjust pickup and care arrangements.
While efforts are underway to reopen the building, the school board has not confirmed when classes will resume.
Families are still waiting for updates on whether students will be able to return to their classrooms the following day.
